Early spring of 2013. Matthew Muñoz, New Kind’s Chief Design Officer and Jonathan Opp, Chief Poetics Officer, meet with Greg Lowenhagen, Hopscotch Music Director, at Cup of Joe on Hillsborough Street near North Carolina State University. This was a connection set-up by Mary Ann Baldwin, a Raleigh city councilor, who saw they had a mutual interest in bringing a design-centric event to the Triangle.
This is a common story that has happened over and over again in the three years I’ve lived in Raleigh. And one I’ve experienced myself. It’s a story I call: the generosity of connection. Raleigh and the Triangle region is a community that helps each other shape the future together. We’re collaborative and supportive which are the conditions where ideas and creativity flourish.
The result of this meeting was the creation of Hopscotch Design. A new two day experience in addition to the Music Festival. It would share Hopscotch Music’s legacy of being a showcase of local talent and a place to experience emerging and experimental artists. Their intention was to create a place to discover the people, places, and ideas shaping what’s next right now.
A year later in the fall of 2014, the inaugural festival took place under the direction of Hannah Ross with headliners like Harper Reed, Elle Luna, and Annie Atkins. We welcomed nearly 400 attendees to the festival for two incredible days. Matt wrote an article called “A Festival of Intent” to document the experience.
We took our lessons learned from the first year and hosted the second year in 2015. We welcome headliners like Steve Frykolm, Austin Kleon, and Ashleigh Axios. Marie wrote an article to recap the Festival called “Acting with Intent.”
We continue to hone the experience and find ways to make it an incredible gathering. We believe the Festival matters because Raleigh is the second-fastest growing city in the United States. There is infinite opportunity for designers of all disciplines and citizens to fill in the region’s half-painted canvas with ideas, expressions, and solutions that are truly unique and great. We want to help catalyze a community of inspired people who feel excited to act on these opportunities and actively contribute to creating a world-class city.
